Under the Railway Line

In 1927,the Superintendent of the "Meherabad Colony" wrote a letter to the Resident Engineer of the G.I.P. Railway, requesting a "Gate-way" be constructed at the Meherabad railway crossing, for the safety of the Meherashram pupils and staff, residents and visitors. It was the time of Baba's flourishing Meherabad.

This was the beginning of years of exploring ways to make it safe for Baba's lovers to cross the railway tracks that divide lower and upper Meherabad. In the past decade, with more trains and more pilgrims, this search was intensified. A few years back, news came that the Railways planned to build a second track next to the original, which further enhanced the need to find a solution for crossing the railway.

Finally, with great help from the railway officials in Sholapur and Delhi, and a reduction in the required amount to make it possible, the Trust was able to fulfill the plan by putting a pedestrian subway under the railway tracks, quite near the old crossing. The site was carefully selected to preserve the original path Baba walked up the Hill and the historic sites in the area.

On 20th October, 2018, the plan went forward. The 10 concrete sections (10 ft. wide by 8 ft. high by 5 feet long totally a length of 50 feet) had been constructed on site months before. Two days before the insertion, several giant cranes and earthmovers arrived and did the outside excavation and initial positioning of the concrete sections.

On 22nd October, the day of insertion of the concrete sections, the timing was crucial and had to be fixed well in advance. The Railway had to prohibit trains from using this track for 2.5 hours (2:00 p.m. to 5:30 pm) affecting train schedules everywhere. At 2:05 pm, when the last train had passed, the work began in earnest. Everything under the two steel rails was removed; five concrete sections were lowered in place, the earth around them replaced and at 5:40 pm, the next train crossed over.
