|Cataract Eye Surgery Camp|
A major function of our Meher Hospital at Meherabad is to host medical “camps,” which are one or two day functions targeting specific diagnostics, treatment or surgery for a selected group of patients. Following Baba’s instructions in establishing the Trust, to provide medical facilities for the local population, the camps reflect the service to others begun by Baba Himself during the early days of Meherabad.
This week we had a cataract eye surgery camp for 19 patients, all villagers from surrounding areas. The patients are identified in advance through the Meher Health Centre clinic and scheduled for the next surgery camp. Our medical team hosts up to six cataract surgery camps per year, all free operations for these village patients. Many of the patients who had operations on Sunday were having their second cataract removed, having attended one of our previous camps for their first surgery. Cataracts are common in this part of the world, particularly for people who work and spend a lot of time outdoors, because of high levels of exposure to ultraviolet light.
The visiting sugeons were Dr. Shirish Shirsath and Dr. Bindu Shirsath, a husband-wife team from Ahmednagar. Dr. Shirish Shirsath has been working with us doing cataract surgeries for the past 14 years. Recently Dr. Shirsath has been working with a charitable project in Ghana, “Sight For Africa.” He came home from Ghana in time for our camp, and brought a visitor with him, a hospital administrator from Ghana, who assisted with patient care during the two days.
